13.1 What is magnetic builder? Back to top
Magnetic Builder is a useful magnetic design software. It is a tool that allows users to create their own magnetic components by selecting different ferrite core, bobbin type and winding method. Engineering drawings will be automatically produced to reduce the work load for users.



All transformer builds can be saved and reused in a power supply as long as the winding numbers are matched.

13.3.1 Select the application of the magnetic component Back to top

13.3.2 Enter the Operating conditions of the application Back to top
You may select AC/DC input by clicking on the radio box to the left of the words "AC Input" and "DC Input".

Vinmax and Vinmin can be changed by updating the value in the text box.

Output voltage and current can be self-defined by updating the value of the corresponding text boxes.

Click "Recommend Xformer" to preview the design sample.

Click "default setting" to return to the initial settings.


The number of output can be changed by clicking the + and - buttons on the right/left of "O/P". The maximum number of output is restricted between 1 and 5 depending on the application selected.

Output voltage and current can be self-defined by updating the value of the corresponding text boxes.


Operating frequency can be changed by clicking the frequency value.

High frequency transformers are also available as PowerEsim will suggest a suitable transformer for the requested operating frequency.

Clicking " more..." allows users to update the value of the corresponding text boxes.


Operating frequency can be changed by entering the value in the text boxes.

Click "core". Please refer to Session 3--Component Finder.

Click the purple image of a circle to go to the website of the manufacturer.

Click "default setting" to return to the initial setting.

Click "help" to go to the user manual.

Click "Apply" to update the changes.



13.3.3 General Function Back to top
Click "OK" to put the transformer in BOM.

Click "Save" to save the transformer file to your computer.

13.3.4 Recommended Transformer Back to top
You may change the Core shape, material and manufacturer by clicking the "Core" button.




Please refer to Session 3--Component Finder.
Change L0 by putting new values in the text box to the right of L0 =.
Clicking "Keeping L0 by" allows users to choose how to maintain the L0 of the transformer.
If the box on the left of "Keeping L0 by" is checked, it allows air gap and allows changes to N0.
Click "help" to go to user manual.
Click "Apply" to update the changes.

If the box to the left of Keep Turn Ratio is checked, once you change the number of turns in the transformer illustration in the middle, the other windings will update the number of turns in ratio.

Click "Vanish" to change the type and manufacturer of vanish used.
Click "UL Insulation System" to change the manufacturer.
Click the image to go to the website of the manufacturer.
Click the "help " button to refer to the user manual.
Click "Apply" to confirm the setting.
Click "Close" to close the page.

Click the image to right of "Wire= ", "Tape= ","Vanish" or "UL Insulation System" to go to the website of the manufacturer.

Click "Add Pri" to increase the number of primary windings.
Click "Add Sec" to increase the number of secondary windings.
Click "Delete" at the side of the windings to delete that winding.
Update the value in the text box in the winding to change the number of turns of that winding.
Enter the value in the text box to change the number of turns.

Click "Advanced" to open the "Magnetic Builder - Winding Construction" page for further implementations in the transformer.

13.3.4.1.1 Top Bar Back to top
Enter the updated value in the text box to change the number of transformers in parallel or in series.
The information on left "Xformer Loss", "Stress" and "Bm" will be automatically updated.
  1. "Xformer Loss" means the losses of the whole transformer.
  2. "fs" is the average switching frequency of the main switch.
  3. "Stress" is the transformer's operating stress including losses.
  4. "Bm" is the peak flux density of the transformer.

  • Click on the words in the red box to open the transformer tester page.
  • Click on the words in the yellow box to open the transformer's loss and stress summary page.

  • Transformer Tester page: Users can change the operating conditions in the transformer tester by entering the values in the text box.

  • Check the Use Recommended Values box. Some conditions will be locked.

  • After modifications, please click on "Recalculate" on the right to update the changes. Transformer results will then be changed.
  • Click "Help" to go to the user manual. Please refer to Session 16--Harmonic.

  • Transformer's loss and stress summary page:

    Check the box to select the manufacturer.

    When you have selected the manufacturer, click on the image to go to the manufacturer website.

    Click on the image to request a quote or sample. Please refer to Session 16--Harmonic.

  • Click on "OK" on the right to confirm the changes.
  • Click on "Cancel" to close the page.
  • Click "Help" to go to the user manual. Please refer to Session 16--Harmonic.

    Advanced settings on the transformer can be controlled on the "Winding Construction" page
    1. Change inductance
    2. Change core shape
    3. Winding
    4. Varnish and UL Insulation System


    13.3.4.1.2.1 Change inductance Back to top
  • Inductance values are shown on the interface. On the left there is a text box which can be used to modify the inductance.

  • Inductance is related to the number of turns and air gap length. Users can use our system to change these factors to keep the desired inductance.

  • Users can check the box to set up conditions, then click "Apply" to apply the changes.

  • Users can click the button to change more details of inductance.

    Information on the selected core and selected magnetic materials is shown. Users can press the blue button to change it.

    After pressing "Core Shape", users will see the following page.

    Users can click on "Core Material" at the bottom right to select different core materials. Please refer to Session 3--Component Finder.

    Users can input the values in the text box. The values of green box will also be changed.

    Users can also click the wires to see more details.


    After clicking the wires, users can open "Component Finder". Please refer to Session 3--Component Finder.

    When the mouse is moved to the winding, different winding layers can be clicked to change it.

    Users can input the values in the text box. The values in the green box will then be also changed.


    13.3.4.1.2.3.5 Winding Detail Back to top
    Click on the "More" buttons for more details on winding.

    There are two types of details on winding - "N0/N1/N2 detail" and "General".

    1. Click to change the number of turns and type of wire.

    2. Click to change the settings of the winding N0,0 (similarly to change the setting of N0,1, N1 and N2)

  • When N0,0=N0,1, users can click the button, then click "ok" to change.

  • Click the drop-down menu on the right to change the order of the winding.

  • As shown below:

  • Click the arrow on the right to open "Advance Winding Construction" to change the detailed settings of winding, tape, upper and lower creepage width, creepage position and winding indent.

  • 3. Click to change split or parallel, and the number of windings.

    1. Users can click "Varnish" to open the varnish page

    Users can select different types, then click "Apply".

    2. Click "UL Insulation System" to open the page.

    Click "Apply" to change settings.

    13.3.4.1.4.1 Bobbin Setting Back to top
    Users can click "Bobbin Setting" to open "Advanced Bobbin Setting".

    "Advanced Bobbin Setting" includes four parts:
    1. Bobbin Thickness
    2. Split Wall & Partition
    3. Winding Detail Setting
    4. Preview

    1. Bobbin Thickness:
    Users can input values in the text box, then it will be displayed on the left.

    2. Split Wall & Partition:
    Users can select the type of split wall, number of split walls and thickness of split wall. It will be displayed on the left.

    3. Winding Detail Setting:
    Users can select "Use Absolute Value" or "Use Ratio" and input values in the text box. It will appear on the left.

    After pressing the button "Winding Construction", user will see the "Advance Winding Construction" page.

    There are two parts£º
    1. Tape setting
    2. Winding construction


    13.3.4.1.4.2.1 Tape Setting Back to top
    The thickness and material of the tape can be set by changing the value of "Type". When clicked, user can select different tape through the drop-down menu. There is data sheet in green box. Click "Apply" to save the change.

    The no. of turn of the tape can be set by changing the value of "No. of Layer".


    13.3.4.1.4.2.2 Winding Construction Back to top
    User can choose whether the dot sign is lie with winding started at the "Winding Start at Dot Sign" box.

    User can choose the winding start position at the "Layers Start Position" box.

    User can choose how the wire is packed at the "Winding Indent" box.
  • Distributed - wire will evenly wind in the allowable winding height.
  • Center - wire will be packed tight at center of the allowable winding height.
  • Low - wire will be packed tight at lower part of the allowable winding height.
  • Upper - wire will packed tight at the upper part of the allowable winding height.

  • User can choose how the wire is arranged if more than 1 layer is needed to complete the winding in the "Multi-Layer Winding" box
  • Shared - wire will evenly shared in each layer
  • Tight - wire will be just tightly wind.

  • User can choose how the creepage tape is placed in the "Creepage Position" box
  • End-To-End - Creepage tape will placed at both end of the allowable winding height
  • Tight - Creepage tape will placed just beside the wire.

  • User can choose how the width of the creepage tapes by changing "Upper Creepage Width" or "Lower Creepage Width" box.

    If more than 1 split sub-winding are made, user can change the number of turns of the each split winding by changing "No. of Turn" box.

    If more than one partition, user can locate the winding in any partition by changing "Winding Partition" box.


    13.3.4.1.4.3 Winding Wizard Setting Back to top
    User can click "Winding Wizard Setting" to open "Winding Wizard Setting" page.

    User can select settings according to winding wizard. Then click "Update" to apply.


    13.3.4.1.4.4 Short Cut function Back to top
    User can use the short cut function to quickly change the design.

    1. "Bobbin" thickness is a short cut to change all the left, upper and lower bobbin thickness at once.

    2. "Creepage Tape" is a short cut to change all the upper and lower creepage tape widths in all winding.

    3. "Winding Method" is a short cut to change all the winding method.

    4. "Winding Indent" is a short cut to change all the winding indents in all winding.

    5. "Multi-Layer Winding" is a short cut to change all the Multi-Layer Winding property.

  • Click "Add Fly Pins" to open "Add Fly Pins" page.

  • - Click "Add" to add fly pins, user can change information of pins.

    - User can delete pins.

    2. Click "Color" to change the color of wires.

    3. Click "Numbers" to change the order of pins.

    User can input extra remarks in the text box.

    7. Preview Preference:
  • User can click the check box, then the drawing will show the winding direction

  • User can click "Drawing" to see the preview of drawing.
  • In the red box, it includes:
    1. Export to Excel;
    2. Export to PDF;
    3. Print

  • 8. Attach Image File:
    User can the button in the red box, then attach image file. It will be showed in the drawing.


    13.3.4.1.4.5.5 Transformer Tester Back to top
    Click the button to open "Transformer Tester" page.

    "Transformer Tester" page lists total losses and waveform in selected conditions.

    User can change values in the page, then click "Recalculate" to see the changes of losses.

    It will recalculate losses (total losses), transformer losses, conduction losses, fringing and leakage flux losses.

    Waveform will be changed at same time.

    Click the button to open"Transformer's Loss and Stress Summary".

    "Transformer's Loss and Stress Summary" lists various losses, including core losses, DC copper losses and so on.
